Breaking barriers to belonging: the power of a simple conversation

Making a difference doesn’t always require big interventions - sometimes it’s about noticing the small things, offering a kind word, and helping someone see that change is possible.

Every Friday morning, Cynon Linc comes alive with conversation, laughter and companionship at the weekly Dementia Matters Coffee Morning. With over 40 attendees, it’s a warm and welcoming space where people affected by dementia can connect with others and feel part of a supportive community.

Among the regular attendees is Mr M, a widower who shared how much the sessions meant to him following the loss of his wife. For Mr M, the Coffee Morning had become a lifeline - one of the only opportunities in the week to socialise and feel less alone. Despite this, staff noticed that he only ever stayed for the first hour of the three-hour session before quietly leaving.

Chloe, one of our dedicated Memory and Wellbeing Guides, built a strong and positive rapport with Mr M and took the time to gently ask why he was leaving early. Mr M explained that he received Meals on Wheels at 11am each day - including Fridays - and didn’t want to risk missing the delivery. He had recently switched to frozen meals for added flexibility but was still worried about making changes to the arrangement, fearing it might disrupt the service altogether.

Chloe reassured him that it was perfectly reasonable to request a change and encouraged him to contact the service to see if Friday’s meal could instead be delivered on Thursday, giving him the freedom to attend the full session. She also offered support if needed, while promoting his independence and confidence in self-advocacy. The following week, Mr M returned with a beaming smile. He had contacted Meals on Wheels, and they agreed to deliver his Friday meal a day earlier. From that point on, he began attending the full Coffee Morning  -and even stayed behind for a catch-up in the café with an old friend.

This small but impactful moment highlighted how a simple conversation can remove a hidden barrier. Mr M had been carrying a quiet worry that was limiting his experience, and it took a gentle, thoughtful exchange to unlock a solution. For Chloe, it was a proud moment—one that demonstrated the importance of listening, asking the right questions, and offering support in ways that empower individuals to take action.

The outcome has been transformative for Mr M. He now fully engages in the sessions, enjoys more time with others, and feels less isolated. For Chloe, the experience reinforced how many people struggle silently with challenges that could be resolved with the right support and encouragement. This story serves as a reminder that making a difference doesn’t always require big interventions—sometimes it’s about noticing the small things, offering a kind word, and helping someone see that change is possible.

Our friendly and inclusive Coffee Morning takes place in the hall at Cynon Linc in Aberdare every Friday from 9.30am-12.30pm. New members are always welcome
