Reaching Out - Befriending Service

Reaching Out is our friendly and supportive befriending initiative, launched in 2016 to help people aged 50+ across Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend feel more connected, valued, and supported in their daily lives.

Stronger Communities

At its heart, Reaching Out is about building stronger, more compassionate communities. With the help of our dedicated local volunteers, we create meaningful connections that make a real difference - offering companionship, a listening ear, and regular contact to those who may need it most.

The service is designed for people who may be experiencing social isolation or loneliness, helping them to feel less alone and more connected to the world around them. We understand that loneliness can affect anyone, and even small, regular interactions can have a powerful impact on someone’s health, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

Options to Suit You

Our aim is to support people to maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle while feeling part of a supportive community. Whether it’s sharing a conversation, building a new friendship, or simply knowing that someone is there, Reaching Out helps bring warmth and reassurance into people’s lives.

There are two ways to get involved in the programme, depending on what suits each individual best. Our befriending options include:

  • Telephone befriending – regular friendly calls to check in, chat, and stay connected
  • Face-to-face visits – in-person companionship in the home or local community

Each connection is built around the needs and preferences of the individual, ensuring a comfortable and meaningful experience.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a friendly connection, or if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer and making a difference in your community, we would love to hear from you. Together, we can help ensure that no one feels alone.
