Expanding digital confidence across our communities
Our EngAGE project continues to grow, and we are delighted to now be running three weekly Digi Cafes across Rhondda Cynon Taf, alongside a number of ad hoc sessions at community venues throughout the region.
Our EngAGE project continues to grow, and we are delighted to now be running three weekly Digi Cafes across Rhondda Cynon Taf, alongside a number of additional ad hoc sessions at community venues throughout the region. This expansion reflects both the success of the project so far and the growing demand for friendly, local digital support.
Led by Jake and Deanne, our free Digi Cafes offer a relaxed and welcoming space where people can get hands-on help with everyday digital queries. Whether it’s learning how to use a smartphone or tablet, setting up email, accessing online services, or building confidence with new technology, our team is there to support people at their own pace.
Chris is a regular attendee and has told us how much he looks forward to the weekly sessions, valuing not only the practical support but also the social aspect, which offers him a welcome respite from his caring responsibilities. Through attending the Digi Cafe, Chris has built up his confidence with digital skills and is now able to shop online and has successfully set up internet banking — two goals he hoped to achieve when he first started coming along.
You can join us on Mondays in Tonyrefail at Rethink, Reuse, Tuesdays at Llanharan OAP Hall, and Thursdays at Cynon Linc in Aberdare. Each session is designed to be informal and supportive, with plenty of time for questions and one-to-one help. Alongside practical digital skills, we also provide advice on staying safe online, including how to recognise and avoid scams, which is becoming increasingly important as more services move online.
Deanne, our EngAGE Community Connector, told us how digital skills play a crucial role in supporting independence and wellbeing, particularly for older people. Being confident online helps people stay connected with family and friends through video calls, messaging apps and social media, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. It also opens the door to essential services, from online banking and shopping to managing health appointments and accessing government information, making everyday tasks easier and more accessible.
Beyond the practical benefits, digital literacy can support learning, creativity and enjoyment. Whether it’s discovering new hobbies, watching favourite programmes, playing games, or exploring online learning opportunities, engaging with technology can promote cognitive health and encourage ongoing social and mental stimulation.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, having the skills and confidence to navigate online spaces is no longer optional - it’s essential. Through our Digi Cafes, we aim to ensure that no one is left behind and that everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in modern society.
Our digital education work is proudly supported by UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UK SPF) funding, helping us to continue expanding this vital support across our communities.
