Introducing ACM PenPals
Our Pen Pal project creates meaningful connections through the simple act of letter writing. By exchanging personalised letters, volunteers offer companionship, comfort, and a friendly voice to older people who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation. These regular letters can brighten someone’s day, spark memories, and build lasting connections over time.
Loneliness remains a significant issue for many older people across the UK. Research suggests that around 1.4 million older adults often feel lonely, a challenge that was further intensified by Covid-19 restrictions and reduced opportunities for social interaction. Through this project, we aim to bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging and reminding individuals that they are valued, remembered, and not alone.
A lost art
The idea for the Pen Pal project was inspired by one of our volunteers, who wanted to brighten the days of older people by connecting them with others in their community through the simple, thoughtful act of letter writing. Reviving this traditional form of communication brings back the special sense of anticipation that comes with receiving a letter through the door. Writing and receiving letters offers a meaningful and enjoyable pastime, while also creating opportunities for genuine connection and lasting friendships to grow.
Project developments for 2026
ACM PenPals is currently being refreshed, with improvements underway to how the project is delivered and supported. During this time, we are not accepting applications from new Pen Pals.
If you have any questions, or would like to register your interest in becoming a Pen Pal in the future, please contact our Volunteering Team at volunteer@ACMorgannwg.org.uk.
